As Hakim Optical continues to grow, we are maintaining an existing full-time Licensed Optician position within our organization. We are seeking a motivated and experienced Licensed Optician to join our team and provide professional optical dispensing services, exceptional patient care, and outstanding customer service while supporting the day-to-day operations of the optical dispensary.

About the Role

The Licensed Optician is responsible for providing professional optical dispensing services and assisting customers with their vision care needs. This role requires strong technical knowledge, excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to delivering exceptional customer service in a fast-paced retail environment.

Responsibilities

Optical Dispensing & Clinical Support

  • Assist clients in selecting eyeglasses by recommending appropriate lens materials, lens designs, frames, coatings, and tints based on their prescriptions and lifestyle needs.

  • Advise clients on the proper selection, insertion, removal, use, and care of contact lenses.

  • Obtain, interpret, and verify eyeglass and contact lens prescriptions issued by Optometrists or Ophthalmologists, or neutralize existing eyewear using a lensometer.

  • Measure pupillary distance, segment height, eye curvature, and other optical measurements using specialized optical equipment.

  • Cut, edge, mount, and finish ophthalmic lenses into frames with precision and accuracy.

  • Adjust, repair, and fit finished eyewear to ensure proper alignment, comfort, and visual performance.

  • Verify completed eyewear for prescription accuracy, lens quality, and proper fit before dispensing to customers.

  • Maintain optical equipment and report maintenance or repair requirements as needed.

Patient Care & Customer Service

  • Prepare patients for eye examinations performed by Optometrists or Ophthalmologists.

  • Support efficient patient flow throughout the examination and dispensing process.

  • Educate customers on eyewear products, lens technologies, warranties, and proper eyewear care.

  • Resolve customer concerns related to prescriptions, eyewear adjustments, product quality, and overall satisfaction in a professional and timely manner.

  • Deliver courteous, professional, and personalized customer service.

Inventory, Lab Coordination & Merchandising

  • Maintain an organized, clean, and professional optical dispensary and retail display area.

  • Coordinate the shipping and receiving of eyewear, ophthalmic instruments, lenses, frames, and related materials with suppliers and laboratories.

  • Monitor inventory levels and notify management when replenishment of optical products and supplies is required.

  • Ensure accurate tracking of customer orders and laboratory work.

  • Assist with merchandising and product displays in accordance with company standards.

Order Management & Administrative Duties

  • Enter, verify, and maintain accurate customer, prescription, and order information in the store management system.

  • Contact customers regarding order status, pickups, repairs, and follow-up appointments.

  • Recall customers for recommended follow-up care or routine eye examinations.

  • Process sales transactions and maintain accurate records of customer purchases.

  • Handle telephone and electronic inquiries professionally and efficiently.

  • Maintain patient records in accordance with company policies and applicable privacy legislation.

Qualifications

  • Professional Licensing (Mandatory): Active registration and license in good standing with the College of Opticians of Ontario (COO).

  • Minimum two (2) years of experience as a Licensed Optician in an optical retail environment.

  • Strong knowledge of ophthalmic lenses, frames, contact lenses, and optical dispensing techniques.

  • Proficiency in lens measurement, fitting, edging, and adjustment.

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills.

  • Strong consultative sales abilities with a customer-focused approach.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.

  • Professional, dependable, and detail oriented.

Assets:

  • Experience processing insurance claims and third-party billing.

  • Familiarity with optical practice management software and point-of-sale (POS) systems.

  • Experience working in a high-volume retail optical environment.

Compensation: $25 per hour / 40 hours per week + Commission per sale
