Position Title: Senior Farm Equipment Operator

Job Description:

Edsonview Farms Ltd. is seeking a highly experienced and versatile Farm Equipment Operator for a long-term position on our commercial farming operation.

The successful applicant must be a highly competent agricultural equipment operator who can safely and independently operate a wide range of modern farm machinery, understand field operations, identify mechanical problems and complete work accurately without constant supervision. Although equipment operation is the primary responsibility, this is a hands-on farming position. The employee must be willing and capable of performing all types of farm work as required.

This is intended to be a long-term position for an experienced agricultural equipment operator who wants significant responsibility within a commercial farming operation.

Primary Equipment Responsibilities

·         Independently operate high-horsepower agricultural tractors and specialized farm machinery including tillage, planting, transplanting, cultivating, fertilizing, spraying and other crop-production equipment in vegetable, forage and other field-crop production.

·         Properly set operating depth, speed, spacing, rates and other machine settings according to field conditions.

·         Operate GPS guidance, autosteer and other precision-agriculture systems.

·         Monitor equipment performance and recognize problems before equipment damage occurs.

·         Perform daily inspections, lubrication and preventative maintenance, diagnose basic mechanical, hydraulic and electrical problems

·         Complete minor repairs and assist with larger equipment repairs.

·         Maintain clean and properly serviced equipment.

·         Safely transport and move agricultural equipment between farm locations and fields.

·         Load and unload equipment and agricultural materials where required.

·         Maintain accurate records of field operations where required.

 

Crop & General Farm Responsibilities

The successful applicant must be willing to perform duties outside of equipment operation when required, including:

·         Field preparation and crop establishment.

·         Planting and transplanting.

·         Crop cultivation and weed control.

·         Fertilizer application.

·         Irrigation setup, operation, monitoring and movement.

·         Moving irrigation pipe, pumps, reels and related equipment.

·         Crop scouting and monitoring field conditions.

·         Assisting with crop care and production activities.

·         Handling and moving agricultural supplies and materials.

·         Cleaning and maintaining farm equipment, shops, yards and work areas.

·         Shop work including equipment maintenance, general farm repairs and maintenance.

·         Washing and preparing equipment.

·         Physical farm labour as required.

·         Assisting other employees and farm crews as required.

·         Performing other duties directly related to the operation of the farm and production of crops.

 

Required Experience:

·         Minimum 3 years of modern agricultural equipment operating experience.

·         Strong understanding of agricultural field operations.

·         Demonstrated ability to operate equipment independently and safely.

·         Experience with GPS guidance and precision-agriculture technology.

·         Strong mechanical aptitude.

·         Experience setting and adjusting agricultural implements.

·         Ability to understand field conditions and make appropriate operating adjustments.

·         Ability to work independently without continuous supervision.

·         Ability to work effectively with other farm employees.

·         Valid driver's licence.

·         Experience in vegetable, forage or intensive crop-production operations is considered a strong asset.

Physical & Working Requirements

·         Physically capable of performing demanding farm work including ability to lift and carry farm supplies and equipment and repeatedly climb on and off agricultural equipment.

·         Comfortable working outdoors in heat, rain, dust and varying weather conditions.

·         Willing to perform physical labour when equipment work is not available.

 

Terms of Employment: Full time / permanent

Language of work: Proficiency in English to execute tasks and able to take instructions for safe operation of equipment.

Wage: 25-30/hr

Hours: 50-60 per week – hours will vary by season, with increased hours during peak planting, irrigation and crop-production periods. Applicant must be available to work early mornings, evenings and weekends when farming conditions require.

Benefit Package: housing may be available to the right candidate

Location of work: Abbotsford, BC.
